Preparing for Baby

Preparing for a new baby is exciting, but we understand that it can sometimes be a little overwhelming. We are here to help you.  See below for information that can help with planning and preparing. If you have questions, please call (618) 664-1230 and ask for the Women and Infants Center.

Labor and Delivery

The Women and Infants Center at Holy Family Hospital provides quality care to pregnant women and their families throughout the birthing process. Our anesthesia providers are available 24 hours a day to provide epidural placement and other pain management, as needed.  Our Women and Infants Center also has different birthing equipment to help laboring moms try different positions to aid in pain relief.

Water Births

HSHS Holy Family Women and Infants Center is one of few hospitals in the area to offer a water birth experience. Women can choose to labor in water and get out for delivery, or they can labor and deliver in water.

Choosing to deliver in water, can provide many benefits to the mother:
  • Comfort and relaxation
  • May decrease operative births
  • Decrease in pain or the need for pain meds
  • May lower blood pressure
  • Enhanced emotional well-being due to increase sense of control
  • May decrease length of labor
  • Perineal trauma may be reduced
  • Buoyancy allows easier movement to find a comfortable position

If you are interested in a water birth, it is best to start the discussion with your obstetrical care provider as there are eligibility requirements for water births. Some of the requirements include:
  • Singleton pregnancy
  • At least 37 weeks gestation
  • Absence of pregnancy complications, such as severe pre-eclampsia, uncontrolled gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM), abnormal fetal growth and any other complication your care provider may deem unsafe for water birth delivery
  • Normal fetal heart rate and reactivity
  • Spontaneous or on-going labor after discontinuation of Pitocin

For questions or to learn more about water births, please call (618) 664-1230 and ask for the Women and Infants Center.

Welcoming Baby

Our maternity nurses are skilled at helping new moms and babies learn how to breastfeed, and our certified lactation consultants provide extra support. We smooth the transition to home with individualized instruction and a customized education program, including educational tools you can view in the privacy of your room.

Private Rooms: Private rooms allow mothers, babies and families to enjoy their time together in privacy. After delivery, you will stay in a private room, until you go home. During this time, we are conscious of your need for privacy, and you will find staff knocking before entering your room.

Well Baby Nursery:  It is encouraged that you room-in with your baby, but we also believe all new parents should have choices. Our Nursery staff is flexible and willing to provide comfort and safety so you are able to be well rested prior to going home.

Amenities and Special Touches
  • Newborn Baby Photos
  • Natural Child Birth Support: We support natural childbirth and low intervention labor
  • Pastoral Care. Our pastoral care department is available to provide spiritual support for the new mom and family at the mother’s request.
  • Other amenities include: Wi-Fi access, TV and DVD players in each room.
